Over a six years period, starting in 2000, I worked with teachers in the 72 lowest performing primary schools in Jamaica to use technology to improve literacy and numeracy instruction. The work was supported by the United States Agency for International Development. One of the most interesting parts of the work was that I visited schools all over Jamaica, met with teachers and students, and conducted workshops for teachers during summers. I photographed many classrooms and students on my visits. School walls were frequently used to display motivational and informational messages for students and I tried to capture as many of those messages as I could. Many of the schools were in rural locations and when schools had internet access, it was through a dial up connection in the principal's office. That made it hard to plan for student or teacher use of the internet during the school day.
I wrote a paper about the project which was published in the International Journal of Learning, Introducing technology in Jamaican primary schools. [download PDF]
